Nanotech Cosmetics and Skin Care

Nanotechnology and beauty

The potentials of nanotechnology are unlimited, while the size of nanometers - a human hair is about 80,000 nanometers thick makes the technology very useful in cosmetics and beauty industry as well. Smaller particles can penetrate into the skin much deeper and greatly improve the efficacy of cosmetic and beauty products. However, just because we have new technology for skin care, should we use it?

Nanotechnology has been utilized by cosmetic and beauty industry and can be found in sunscreens, anti-aging creams, lipsticks and variety of other skin care products. Among the most famous beauty industries utilizing nanotechnology are L'Oreal and Lancome both of which use nanotechnology in some of their wrinkle-reducing creams. According to L'Oreal nanosomes of Pro-Retinol A which are found in L'Oreal Revitalift anti-wrinkle cream enable immediate results because they are absorbed deeper into the skin.

Besides deeper absorption of nano-particles into the skin, nanotechnology also enables use of a wider range of substances because it can be used for coating of substances which  would cause irritation if used in raw form. Thus nanotechnology enables the anti-aging and skin care products manufacturers to produce creams with similar efficacy than Botox and plastic surgery.

There has been a lot of debate about safety of nanotech cosmetics and skin care products because the technology is relatively new and long-term effects on human health are still unknown. However, so far there are any conclusive evidence about potential health risks of nanotech cosmetics and beauty products, while all products which are introduced to the consumers go through series of different safety tests which means they are theoretically as safe (or unsafe) as conventional beauty and skin care products.
