Nutraceutical Products

The nutraceutical industry is a multi-billion dollar a year industry, with products ranging from vitamin supplements and weight loss pills, such as fat and cortisol blockers, to male enhancers.

These over the counter supplements claim that they improve your life. Better living through chemistry, I dare say.

However, whether or not these products actually do work is highly debated. And nutraceuticals imported from other countries are highly suspect in terms of their quality.

The major players in the nutraceutical manufacturing shift constantly. One of the overriding factors seems to be who has been sued recently for false claims. Lawsuits from disgruntled consumers have led to a shake up of industry, which is not subject to FDA oversight. Unfortunately, there is so much money to be made in the supplement industry false advertising is rampant.

Another factor in ranking these companies is who has made a research break through, and actually created a beneficial and revolutionary product. After all, the people who discovered botox worked to inhibit wrinkles were actually looking to create a product to stop uncontrollable eye twitching.

The basis of many of these “wonder drugs” is what’s referred to as “proprietary formulas.” Oh, they’ll tell you what’s in them, but not what proportions they are mixed. Considering the dangers of drug interactions, buying the ingredients separately is not a recommended practice.

Also to be considered is the manufacturing process. Many pills are manufactured in India and China. China has had it share of quality control problems. Shooting CEOs is one way of dealing with unethical manufacturing. Anyone who has bought contaminated baby and pet food might concur with how the problem was handled.

There’s no guarantee that products from American plants, or pharmaceutical grade facilities produce effective supplements, with the big caveat that if a corporation spends that much on their lab facilities for R&D, as well as manufacturing, they are less likely to cut corners on the ingredients for their product. Maybe.

Many herbals used in neutraceuticals do not grow in the United States and have to be imported from Asia, Africa and South America. There is no guarantee that the original ingredients are free of contaminant, contain the leaf, which is effective, versus the root, which is not, or is the right genus of plant.

When it comes to neutraceutical products, as the old saying goes, “You pays your money and you takes your chance.”
